Developer employment and artificial intelligence in 2026: juniors have disappeared

Developer vacancies are recovering in the United States, with senior roles driving 71% of the increase. For a business owner having software built, that means scarcer, more expensive profiles, and the disappearance of the junior who handled small fixes.

Developer employment and artificial intelligence in 2026: US software development vacancies have risen nearly 15% since Claude Code launched in late February 2025, while all vacancies fell 7% (Indeed Hiring Lab, July 8, 2026). Between May 2025 and May 2026, senior positions account for 71% of that rise.

What the indices say

Indeed Hiring Lab's August 24, 2026 dashboard gives the overall vacancy index as 101.8 and software development as 74.4, after a low of 61.1 in May 2025. The profession is recovering while remaining around 27.5% below pre-pandemic levels according to the same source. Job titles mentioning AI account for 6.3% of all vacancies, versus a previous peak of 3.3% in 2022, and 37% of the observed year-on-year increase. A significant caveat: these figures describe the US market and cannot be transferred unchanged to France.

The position that disappeared from the middle

Recovery comes from the top. Companies reopen senior positions while leaving entry doors closed, where beginning developers learned by fixing small things in real products. Yet that was the person you called to change a label, add an export column, or repair a form. The work still exists; whoever takes it now costs an experienced professional's rate.

What 120 economists expect

Indeed Hiring Lab's quarterly survey published August 5, 2026 asked 120 economists about AI's employment impact over the next year: 52% expect a net negative effect, 35% a net gain, and 13% no effect. For productivity, 70% expect a modest to moderate improvement and 4% a major transformation. Keep that 4% in mind when a provider promises a productivity leap. The same gap between promise and measurement appears in research discussed in AI makes experts slower.

Why this matters even if you are not hiring

A market concentrating demand on scarce profiles pushes daily prices up and response times out. Two effects for anyone having software built. First, custom development quotes become harder to obtain and more expensive to accept; the option comparison is in how much application development costs. Second, depending on one person becomes riskier because replacing them takes months. We described that scenario in the day your provider stops responding.

Have work built without hiring

An agent team you direct does not replace a senior developer for major architectural decisions, high-stakes legacy takeovers, or work requiring legal accountability for the outcome. It changes the nature of small jobs: the export column, label, broken form, changes waiting for availability. You describe the change, approve the document describing it, construction happens before you, and the previous version remains recoverable in a click. These fixes cost tokens rather than days.

What protects a small organisation

Two things. First, an approved specification written in your language that survives the builder's departure. Second, possession of code and documents on your premises, with no account to reactivate or contract to renegotiate for access. These assets are worth more than a maintenance contract when the labour market tightens because they make the next provider replaceable. An experienced developer taking over a documented product bills working hours; the same developer taking over a silent product first bills reading hours.

What a business owner can do this month

List pending changes to your tools, the ones postponed for six months because nobody is available. Split them into two columns: changes touching a clear business rule and changes touching the product's underlying operation. The first can be handled without hiring today, and the assistant choice is explained in Codex or Claude Code. The second awaits a professional and deserves an experienced professional's budget rather than that of a junior you will not find.
