Zero clients in six months: why SMEs reject custom development

A provider contacted around 1,500 companies in six months and got four meetings, all lost when price and timeline entered the conversation. SMEs' refusal is explained by two numbers, and one just changed.

SMEs reject custom development over two numbers: cost and timeline. A provider reports on Reddit (r/smallbusiness, June 2026) six months of prospecting, around 1,500 companies contacted, four meetings, zero clients. All disengaged when price and timeline arose.

The two numbers an SME hears

Ten real quotes compiled by eid-lab in March 2026 show the range owners receive: €3,500 for a module-based site to €45,000 for the heaviest projects, with 4–16-week timelines. The cheapest €3,500 quote is no faster: 8–12 weeks assembling modules. Paying more does not mean faster. Hearing five figures and months for an internal tool, an owner compares with hiring, a van, or a year's cash reserves and hangs up. We detailed these scales in how much an MVP costs in 2026.

What cash flow permits in 2026

Context worsens the reflex. Bpifrance Le Lab's 83rd half-year barometer, published July 2026 from 4,637 responses by owners with 1–249 employees, finds 38% planning investment that year and 31% reporting difficult cash flow, up one point over six months. With three in ten under pressure, the decision criterion is entry cost rather than three-year returns. Five-figure quotes fit none of those conversations.

Nobody gets rich on the other side of the quote

The provider is not stealing that price. A freelancer explains on Reddit (r/developpeurs, July 2026) why fixed prices exhaust them: 'you sell 30 days, spend 45, but cannot rebill everything if you want to keep the client'. Between quote and delivery, needs shift, scope grows, and the client discovers their intentions through the first screen. The quote absorbs that risk in advance and rises. We unpack this in the quote is not the cost.

The gap swallowing medium-sized needs

One family finds nobody: workshop tracking, two-team scheduling, custom commission calculations. Too specific for market software, too small to justify €20,000. These end in spreadsheets the owner maintains on Sundays, staying there for years. The SME never rejected the tool's usefulness.

What entry cost becomes when you direct

When an AI agent team builds under your direction, the budget changes composition: you pay the assistant plan and usage, and spend time describing rules, reading, correcting and approving. AI spending observed in our tests is not the price of a complete management tool; any hosting, external services and maintenance must be added. A limited initial scope lets you measure the effort before expanding the project. An agency also provides a team, a contact and contractual responsibility: for regulatory stakes or departments with conflicting needs, that support can justify its price.

Price your case before calling anyone

List what you do outside software: every satellite spreadsheet, duplicate entry, manually repeated calculation. Multiply weekly time by your fully loaded hourly cost over a year. Above €3,500, a tool is already justified at the range's first quote. Above €20,000, the problem is time rather than price, and this list, not a specification, belongs on the table at the first meeting.
